LIBRARY ASSISTANT
The Caribbean Maritime University (CMU), the only specialized maritime university in the English-speaking Caribbean is inviting applications for the post of Library Assistant (Level 3).
JOB SUMMARY
The Library Assistant-Circulation will assist with the services and clerical duties required in the operations of the Library’s Circulation Desk as a public service to students, faculty and other users. He/she will answer general technical questions, help maintain the organization of library materials and facilities, as well as provide in-person, email, and phone assistance to patrons for library resources, facilities, and services. The incumbent will provide excellent customer service to users.
Key Outputs:
-Documents are appropriately categorized and stored in accordance with the University’s policy and procedures.
-Aid with the development of circulation policies and procedures
-Respond to requests from library users
-Maintain logbooks at the Circulation Desk.
-Maintain accurate records of all library items.
-Filing systems developed and maintained.
-Sustain positive and collaborative relationships with staff members.
-Liaise with internal and external stakeholders.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
-Provides administrative support to the Circulation Department.
-Supports the Circulation Librarian in the implementation of policies and procedures to ensure consistency in service quality, policy interpretation, and procedures.
-Charges books, magazines and other library holdings in and out at the Circulation Desk and inspects them for damages.
-Supports numerous circulation-related transactions including renewing library materials and reserves, creating and editing user records.
-Supports the inputting of data in the Circulation Module of the Integrated Library System.
-Responds to reference/information queries from users and make referral to supervisor as needed.
-Compile list of users with overdue fines.
-Aids users in locating books and information.
-Garners circulation data and produce statistical information through monthly and annual reports.
-Communicates with faculties about required course texts.
-Answers questions from students, staff, and faculty about library policies and procedures.
-Aids in the creation and maintenance of displays highlighting the library, its policies, and collection.
-Maintains order of the circulating and reference collections and oversees general stack maintenance.
-Replaces books, magazines and other library holdings on shelves.
-Maintains accurate library shelving by shelf-reading and re-shelving of materials, as needed.
-Provides assistance to users in printing, scanning and operating photo-copier.
-Monitors and maintain the machines used for reprographic services, namely: printer, photocopier, scanner, etc.

-There may be additional duties in accordance with improved or enhanced organization wide goals and objectives.

-Knowledge of using Library Integrated Systems.
-Ability to assist users with e-resources (databases and e-book collections).
-Ability to record and transcribe minutes of meetings.
-Ability to maintain calendars and schedule appointments.

Minimum Required Qualification and Experience.
-Associate degree / Diploma / Certificate in Library Science or equivalent from an accredited institution
-At least 2 years working experience in a library.
-Practical experience in an academic library environment.
-Proficiency in Microsoft Suite
-Computing experience, this includes scanning and digitizing, record uploading, use of networked resources.
