LECTURER IN SPANISH

The Caribbean Maritime University (CMU), the only specialized maritime university in the English-speaking Caribbean is inviting applications for Lecturer in Spanish (Level 7) post.

SUMMARY

The Lecturer is a member of the academic staff involved in the teaching and learning, research, university service and outreach.He/she delivers the most modern and effective teaching and assessment methodologies within the disciplines; assist in developing the framework to facilitate and promote student and Faculty research projects; serves as resource person, mentor and coach assistant lecturers and students. The Lecturer also provides advice on the development of curricula and coordinate their implementation; teaches and presents papers at local and international fora; assists with the preparation of timetables and other training schedules; publishes conference papers and do presentations on advanced research topics.

 Key Outputs:

-Research, teaching, and training assignments executed in accordance with curriculum and established Faculty Objectives.

-Participated in curriculum review, amendment and development activities.

-Supported the establishment of cross University collaborative links

-Students’ research activities supervised.

-Supported accreditation and general quality assurance activities of the faculty

 Key Responsibility Areas:

-Delivers a wide range of effective and inclusive teaching and supporting learning activities.

-Assess the work and progress of students and provide them with constructive feedback.

-Engages in professional development in relation to teaching, learning and assessment, including the use of an evidence-informed approach, which utilises the outcomes of research and scholarship, to enhance practice.

-Supports curriculum development, curriculum review, syllabi writing, and syllabi review in area of specialization.

-Conducts lectures in accordance with approved syllabus and lesson plan.

-Submits questions and answers to exam bank according to schedule and in a timely manner.

-Administers test and quizzes in accordance with course outlines and in keeping with the examination standards.

-Marks and grades examination scripts within the established timeframe.

-Develops and applies innovative approaches to improve the learning environment, teaching and/or assessment and feedback methods.

-Contributes to course development and the development of new programmes of study.

-Participates in teaching initiatives at a regional, national and/or international level.

-Contributes to outreach and/or Widening Participation activities within the Department, Faculty/School or University.

-Participates in orientation, graduation, and other student related activities.

-Leads research or professional team as appropriate.

-Supervises students and staff research activities to ensure commitment to the highest standards of ethics and integrity in research.

-Develops and manages research activity, and or applied research contracts and or consultancies including some with international partners.

-Attracts external funding to support research activity.

-Maintains a regular output of high-quality research which are published in leading research journals or other outputs as appropriate to the discipline.

-Presents research at national and/or international conferences and/ or at other appropriate events.

-Engages effectively in non-academic impact of research, including substantial knowledge or technology exchange and/or public engagement activities, involving a range of partnerships with external organisations.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE

-Master’s degree in the area of specialization awarded by an accredited institution.

-Teachers’ Diploma or Advanced Technical Certification(s) would be an asset.

-At least three (3) years instructional experience in a tertiary institution with one of those years working in curriculum development, testing and assessment. He/she should also have experience in presenting workshops for adults.

KEY COMPETENCIES

-Collaborates with the Heads of the units to develop and implement measurement and evaluation strategies and systems.

-Design measurements tools for programmes.

-Supports overall student development and provides ongoing subject matter expertise in using high quality data to measure programme inputs, outputs and outcomes.

-Conducts workshops for faculties and departments to provide coaching and knowledge transfer.

-Provides leadership and guidance to the development and implementation of satisfaction measurement tools and instruments for university-wide use that enable the programme to conduct empirical assessment through baseline surveys at the beginning of delivery.

-Competence in Microsoft Office Applications

-Excellent human relations and interpersonal skills.

-Ability to communicate effectively, both in written and verbal formats.

-Excellent written and verbal communication skills including presentation skills.

Key Updates from the CMU Student and Staff Town Hall

Dear CMU Community,

Please see below key updates and decisions from the recently held Student and Staff Town Hall, as shared by the University Administration.

Scheduling and Assessment Adjustments

The University will resume face-to-face classes on Wednesday, November 5, 2025, at the Main Campus, while the Port Royal and Western Campuses will resume on Monday, November 10, 2025. Modality details for the affected campuses will be communicated shortly.

-Semester One Final Examinations have been rescheduled to January 3–16, 2026.

-Semester Two will commence on January 26, 2026 and end on May 3, 2026, with examinations scheduled to begin April 18, 2026.

-The current semester will include 13 weeks of teaching and 2 weeks of assessments, ensuring compliance with the University Counsel of Jamaica (UCJ) accreditation requirements.

-Mid-semester examinations will be replaced by coursework submissions or alternative assessments, promoting flexibility amid recent disruptions.

-Course work and class recordings will be made available via the Moodle platform for those with connectivity issues.

-Students who are unable to attend face-to-face classes will not be penalized, and faculty will ensure opportunities to catch up are provided.

Student Support and Financial Considerations

To assist students and staff affected by Hurricane Melissa, the University has implemented several relief measures:

-A Hurricane Relief Fund will be established, and care package distribution will take place on Sunday, November 9, 2025, beginning at 11:00 a.m. at the Montego Bay Campus.

-The Staff Welfare System will be reviewed and reactivated to provide support to affected faculty and staff.

-Tuition payments for Semester One are extended to December 31, 2025 and late payment fees for tuition will be waived to alleviate financial strain.

-All students will receive a 10% tuition discount in Semester Two.

-Students facing hardship due to job losses or other financial challenges are encouraged to reach out to the Office of Student Services or the Students’ Union for assistance.
